A valve is a type of pipe closure that regulates the flow of fluids (gases, fluidized solids, slurries, and liquids) by opening, closing, or partially blocking various passages. The functional element is the valve plate, which is moved by means of a screw spindle. The lift of the disc is usually 1/4 of the seat width, which results from the requirement of approximately the same flow rate through the valve seat and around its disc. Valves usually do not meet the requirement for the most direct passage of liquid through the pipeline, because the flow direction changes twice, or once in the case of a corner valve.
