A sludge pump, also known as a sewage pump or sump pit pump, is a device designed for pumping and handling sludge and sewage in sewage treatment plants. The operating principle of the sludge pump is based on hydraulic and mechanical principles. A sump pump has a suction and an outlet hose or pipe. There are basically two main types of slurry pumps:
Centrifugal Slurry Pumps: These pumps create pressure and pump out the sludge using a rotating bladed wheel (rotor) inside the pump. An air valve is often used to prevent the hose from clogging when suctioning sludge. Centrifugal pumps are the most commonly used type of sludge pumps in wastewater treatment plants.
Lever Slurry Pumps: These pumps are manual and are used where electricity is not available or where a smaller amount of sludge needs to be pumped. Lever pumps work by manually moving a piston that forces sludge through an outlet hose.
