The linear modulus of elasticity

The linear modulus of elasticity, often referred to as G, (modulus of elasticity in shear / modulus of elasticity in shear) is another of the main elastic moduli used to characterize the mechanical properties of solid materials. This module refers to material properties related to elasticity with respect to shear stress.

The linear modulus of elasticity is defined as the ratio between shear stress and shear strain in a material. Shear stress is caused by forces acting on the material uniformly by moving one part of it relative to the other. Shear deformation is a change in the shape of a material due to shear stress.

Mathematically, the linear modulus of elasticity is expressed by the formula:

G = (shear stress) / (shear strain)

Linear modulus is measured in pascals (Pa) or megapascals (MPa) because it is the ratio between force (N/m^2) and relative change in shape. Like the Young's modulus, the linear modulus of elasticity depends on the type of material and its composition.

The linear modulus is an important parameter in assessing the shear resistance of a material and in the design of components that are subjected to shear stresses, such as axles in shafts, springs, panel walls and many other applications. Different materials have different values of linear modulus, which affects their ability to resist deformation under shear loading.
